Dear Reader,

One month from now, on October 22, 2024, graphene will be celebrating its 20th birthday.

Crazy to think that this futuristic, nanostructural wonder material has already been with us for two decades, but it’s a historical fact.

graphene

Though known and somewhat understood in theory since the 1940s, when it came to the first intentional isolation of the carbon-based single-layer nanostructure, the milestone event took place on October 22, 2004 during research conducted by physicists Andre Giem and Konstantin Novoselov.

Six years later, it won both men the Nobel Prize for physics, which almost immediately kicked off the graphene marketing craze.

As usually is the case when writers and journalists start speculating on what scientists and engineers will be able to do, the expectations of what graphene would mean to society quickly spiraled out of control.

Graphene planes. Graphene prosthetics. Graphene implants… Graphene circuit boards to supplant silicon.

So Where Is This Graphene Based World We Were Promised?

Everything was supposed to be if not replaced, then enhanced by this wonder material.

Only problem was with production costs running at over $3000/ounce a full decade after the material was first isolated, economic realities simply did not line with the imaginations of the futurists touting the innovation.

So by the time the world turned its attention to the Trump presidency, and a few years later, to the Covid pandemic, and then onto the lithium bubble, graphene had become all but an afterthought.

But the thing is, historically, it’s the days after the hype wears off that the most dramatic progress begins.

Just think back to the late 90s, when the internet first started to glow with the magical aura of a society-altering technology.

Then the bubble burst, laying waste to hopeful speculators in the spring of 2000. But after the dust settled, the tech sector continued to grow, largely hype free, for the next two decades.

One look at the Nasdaq’s last quarter century, which more or less tracked this macrotrend, paints the full picture.

The initial hype was just a blip on the radar when viewed in context with the entire story.

Right now, as you read this, the first signs that graphene is hitting precisely that point in its evolution are coming into view.

And the most salient of those signs is the quiet appearance of truly world-changing technologies – into the consumer market

One example that’s perhaps the most characteristic of graphene’s transformative effect comes to us from the rechargeable battery industry.

There’s an Australian company developing a 100% lithium free, graphene-aluminum rechargeable battery that’s currently in advanced testing.

This battery boasts charge capacity and service life of 3-5 times greater than that of lithium-ion, which is itself remarkable given that energy density is lithium’s strong suit.

These Numbers Aren’t A Typo… But They Are Enough To Start A Revolution

But even more impressive is charge speed, which is said to be up to 70x faster than even today’s best performing lithium ion batteries.

At that speed, smart phones will need about one minute of charge per week to stay in operation.

For electric cars, one minute at the charge station per month will supply the average American driver’s needs.

Sounds incredible, but this is precisely the level of enhancement that graphene offers to many of the products where it can be applied.

But the real innovation that this Australian company is bringing to humanity isn’t the batteries, but the graphene itself — produced in quantities and at prices previously thought impossible.

Because of all the things graphene can do, scalability on the level necessary for the mass consumer market was the single biggest hurdle.

With that hurdle finally surmounted, all of the fantasies promised to us over the last twenty years are finally within the reach of reality.

This company trades publicly on two north American exchanges, and has the potential to disrupt the lithium-ion battery market over the next 3-5 years.

And yet, I’d bet you’ve never heard of it.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells: The Downfall of Tesla?

Lithium has been the front-runner in the battery technology market for years, but that is all coming to an end. Elon Musk is against them, but Jeff Bezos is investing heavily in them. Hydrogen Fuel Cells will turn the battery market upside down and we've discovered a tiny company that is going to make it happen...
